Juniper Street
Juniper Street is one of the long streets of the Rio Vista section, running about 3,200 feet from Treble Cove Road south to Liberty Drive, parallel to Nashua Road and Brandon Street. It was laid out on "Section A" of "Rio Vista, Billerica, Mass.," the plan dated July 1, 1927 by George H. Wetherbee Jr., civil engineer, of Boston and Braintree (Plan Book 51, Plan 49, recorded February 16, 1928), where it runs from the Treble Cove Road south across Walton, Kenwood and Somerset Streets to Hillcrest Street, today's Liberty Drive, with a single row of blocks between it and the Chelmsford Road, as Nashua Road was then called. The plan of the whole development, dated June 4, 1928 (Plan Book 52, Plan 58), kept it unchanged. Juniper is one of several plant names on the Rio Vista plans, with Laurel, Ivy and Larchwood; the plans do not explain the names. There was no road on this line before 1927.
The street was built up slowly. A resident of "Juniper St., West Billerica" appears in a town list of 1955. The town graded, graveled and sealed it in 1969 and sealed it again in 1970. It was accepted as a public way at the annual town meeting of April 24, 1980, "from Treble Cove Road to Hillcrest Street," the layout following "the 1927 plan except on the westerly side near the Hillcrest Street intersection," where it followed a plan of 1978. The finance committee did not recommend it, and the street acceptance committee reported that the street was "in 4 sections" and that "only one section meets specifications," but the motion carried. Drainage work followed in 1990 and 1994, the street was repaved in 2006, and in 2015 a new water main was carried from Rio Vista Street down Kenwood Street to Juniper Street.
